Important Information for all Parents from Professor Philip Thickett, Chair of Governing Body
20 October 2014
On behalf of the Governing Body I need to inform you that Mrs Elaine Kenney, the Head Teacher of Swanshurst has announced her intention to retire from her post at the end of the Summer Term 2015.
Obviously there will be many future occasions before the summer for us to say something of the importance of Mrs Kenney’s tenure as Head Teacher, but I want to start by saying that she has been a brilliant leader of Swanshurst, developing the school in both its academic standards and its pastoral care of several generations of girls. This mix is at the heart of what Swanshurst does so well and it is her determination, cascaded down through Senior, Middle and Lower leadership groups, that every child matters that has made her an inspirational leader and colleague.
Mrs Kenney has also developed a very strong team of senior and middle managers, all totally committed to her vision of Swanshurst as an organisation and a community. Her leadership has empowered others to develop the academic, pastoral and site developments that make Swanshurst an outstanding school. Some of these colleagues have left to take on successfully managing other schools or parts of schools. She has also been a significant figure in the whole of the educational community of the City of Birmingham. So her legacy is not just defined by her role at Swanshurst.
I wish to assure you of two things as we take in the announcement of Mrs Kenney’s retirement; firstly that we do have a strong senior team who will continue to lead the school this year to secure for all the pupils the same academic and pastoral environment that has been the hallmark of the school.
Secondly, that the Governing Body will be working very hard in order to recruit a new Head Teacher who will continue to develop Swanshurst School as a caring educational community, whilst dealing with the ever changing educational environment as it responds to both National and City-wide policy reviews.
I will write to you again when we have established the process by which we will recruit to this post and I will continue to keep you informed as that process runs its course.
Professor Philip Thickett
Chair of Governing Body
